Tomorrow's outcomes. Here today at Kernan Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.

One of the largest and most sophisticated rehabilitation facilities in the nation, Kernan Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation offers a broad range of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitative services, including physical, occupational, recreational, speech and language therapies, and is home to the area’s premier Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury/Multiple Trauma, Stroke, and Comprehensive Medical Rehabilitation Programs. Surgical specialties include joint replacement, sports medicine, hand and upper extremities, foot/ankle, and pediatric orthopaedics.

The facility is located in Woodlawn at the western border of Baltimore City in Baltimore County, and has outpatient physical therapy sites within the hospital and Woodlawn.

Kernan Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation offers specialty care services that include:

  • Kernan utilizes state-of-the-art therapeutic technologies such as VitalStim, an electrical stimulation system for patients with swallowing disorders, and the H200 Hand Recovery system for patients with limited use of their upper extremities. It is one of 12 hospitals and rehabilitation centers in the United States—and the only facility in Maryland—to use Lokomat, a robot-assisted gait training device that helps to stimulate areas of the spinal cord that are thought to control the ability to walk.
  • Here, talented orthopaedic surgeons are leading the way in joint replacement, sports medicine; scoliosis; neck and back injuries; hip, knee, wrist and ankle procedures, and surgeries to resolve hand and shoulder injuries. The Orthopaedic Surgery facility is a well-known and respected physician’s resource for consultation, second opinion, diagnosis, and ongoing treatment of patients with musculoskeletal problems.
  • Our sports medicine physicians and orthopaedic residents work directly with many of the area athletic trainers to offer every resident of our community the same level of care we offer the members of the University of Maryland Terrapins athletic teams. In addition to treating sports medicine injuries, our physicians are actively involved in research studies directed at better understanding athletic injuries, improving treatment choices, and getting athletes and active individuals back on their feet faster.
  • Recognized as a Cleft Palate Team (CPT) by the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA), our multidisciplinary team includes specialists in Audiology, Genetics, Orthodontics, Otolaryngology, Pediatrics, Pediatric Dentistry, Plastic Surgery, and Speech-Language Pathology.
  • The University of Maryland Pain Management Center’s comprehensive assessment and use of concurrent treatment modalities helps patients attain long-term outcomes, including interventional procedures, medication management, physical therapy, and psychological support to hasten the healing process.
