Tomorrow's outcomes. Here today at Maryland General Hospital.

Maryland General Hospital (MGH) is a 242-bed, urban teaching hospital serving patients in Baltimore and the Midtown area. It is one of just a few community hospitals in Maryland to offer comprehensive specialty inpatient care in neurosurgery, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, women’s health, behavioral health, rehabilitation, vascular and thoracic surgery, as well as a number of other surgical specialties, including gastroenterology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and otolaryngology. MGH has over 550 community physicians on its staff, including specialists in more than 30 areas. With its 24/7 hospitalist and surgical house officer programs, patients are ensured continuity of care from admission to discharge.

Maryland General offers specialty care in over 30 areas, including:

  • The ACE Unit (Acute Care for the Elderly) is an inpatient program manned by an interdisciplinary team that includes specialists in pharmacy, rehabilitation, nutrition, social work, and care management-as well as geriatricians, nurse practitioners, and specially trained nursing staff—who use specialized protocols to meet the healthcare needs of elderly patients.
  • Much of the population served at Maryland General is challenged with the issues facing people on the lower economic status, including nutrition contributing factors that can result in diabetes. In fact, nearly 40% of the patients seen are diabetic. Our highly trained team includes endocrinologists, nurse educators, nutritionists, and support staff who help persons with diabetes take charge of their own health and well-being.
  • At the Neuroscience Center for Pain, Headache, and Spasticity, our highly trained multidisciplinary team—including neurological surgeons, neurologists, interventional pain management specialist, nurse practitioners, PT/OTs, and psychologist—allow us to take a comprehensive approach in the management of acute and chronic pain.
  • Maryland General Hospital is a satellite site of the Institute for Human Virology, a program for patients living with HIV/AIDS and other viral diseases. It has one of the largest HIV clinics in the area, with an expanded team of physicians with expertise in clinical virology, including HIV/AIDS, HTLV, human papilloma virus, Hepatitis A, B, and C viruses, and other viral diseases; access to clinical research trials; and nursing and social work services specifically focused on managing patients with these diseases.
  • Our CARF-accredited Rehabilitation Center has 33 inpatient beds, 15 assigned to patients who have sustained traumatic brain injuries or stroke, with the remaining 18 beds designated for comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation of patients with neurological conditions/injuries, or orthopedic injuries.
  • Maryland General’s residencies in internal medicine and ophthalmology give physicians a distinct advantage—the rigorous training you’d expect in a busy, mid-sized urban hospital, but with the individualized attention of a smaller residency program. Plus, our affiliation with the University of Maryland Medical System expands the resources available to program participants.
  • Our integrated OB/GYN and nurse midwifery program makes 1,300 deliveries a year, and offers 24/7 in-house OB and anesthesia coverage. We also offer a host of special programs, including free pregnancy testing and prenatal education, as well as programs like the Paquin School for expectant teenage mothers.
  • Managed by UMMC faculty, our Rapid Access Team approach allows patients to undergo bedside registration and quick triage. On-duty staff meet with patients as a group so everyone hears the patient’'s history and current problems at one time.
  • A dedicated clinical space with full-service vascular laboratory allows physicians to evaluate and treat a wide range of vascular conditions, including the two most common problems, PAD and AAA, as well as arterial and venous diseases and renovascular hypertension. The center also offers renal therapy and endovascular therapy.

Capital Improvements

  • Enhanced Coronary Artery Imaging – Maryland General’s new 64-slice CT scanner enhances our cardiovascular diagnostic capabilities and offers rapid examination of the blood vessels in the brain in stroke. This scanner will also allow for CT Colonography for colorectal screening as an alternative to colonoscopy.
  • Core Facilities Replacement – A $57.1 million facility renovation project of our Medical ICU, PACU, and Surgical Support Units, as well as a 64,600-sq.-ft. expansion, is scheduled for completion in 2010. This expansion will provide our facility with 10 new Operating Rooms, new Pharmacy and Lab facilities, as well as a state-of-the-art Cysto Room.
