Founded in 1823 as the Baltimore Infirmary, the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) is one of the nation’s oldest academic medical centers. Located on the west side of downtown Baltimore, the Medical Center is distinguished by discovery-driven tertiary and quaternary care for the entire state and region and innovative, highly specialized clinical programs. The Medical Center maintains a close partnership with the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and UMMC’s 12 clinical departments are led by outstanding physician leaders with national and international reputations.

All of the medical center’s physicians are faculty members at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the nation’s fifth oldest and first public medical school and a recognized leader in biomedical research and medical education.

Cancer care and research that help move drugs and therapies from laboratory to bedside faster. Our Cancer Center patients benefit from new treatments before they are widely available, making it a place where hope is truly a way of life.

The University of Maryland Hospital for Children

Addressing serious and complex health issues in newborn to young-adult patients, the Hospital’s primary-care and specialty programs treat children from across the mid-Atlantic region. Its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, one of the state’s largest, cares for premature infants from around the region.

The University of Maryland Heart Center

A national leader in evaluating and treating cardiac disease, and recognized for expertise in minimally invasive heart bypass and valve surgery (including mitral valve repair), heart transplantation and pioneering work with heart pumps.

Joslin Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center

As an affiliate member of the Boston Center, our Joslin Center meets the highest standards of care for people with diabetes. Its programs reflect a philosophy which has been the hallmark of Joslin’s care—a comprehensive team approach to diabetes treatment with programs designed to help children and adults with diabetes take charge of their own health and well-being.

Minimally Invasive Therapy Center

Here, world-renowned surgeons, physicians and other clinical staff are pioneering new techniques and performing advanced procedures across all medical/surgical specialty areas. UMMC recently opened a Surgical Simulation and Technology Center, one of only a few hospital-based centers of its kind in the United States.

The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center

The world’s first and foremost Trauma facility, and the cornerstone of Maryland’s EMS Trauma System, the center serves as regional referral center for head and spinal-cord injuries, multi-system trauma, and severe orthopaedic injuries. It also serves as Maryland’s Primary Adult Resource Center (PARC) for Trauma.

The Joseph and Corinne Schwartz Division of Transplantation

Home to one of the nation’s largest kidney and pancreas transplant programs, and pioneers in simultaneous pancreas/living-donor kidney transplants, minimally invasive kidney removal, steroid-free protocols, and islet-cell and domino liver transplants.

Women’s Services

Provides comprehensive services for women of all ages and backgrounds, and is leading the way in treatment areas such as infertility, fetal abnormalities, high-risk pregnancy, critical care obstetrics, general obstetrics, gynecologic cancer, and urogynecology.

Capital Improvements

R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center – Scheduled for completion in 2011, this $83 million expansion and renovation will expand and upgrade patient care capacity in areas such as our Multiple Trauma Unit, ICU, Acute Care and our Ambulatory Care Clinic.
North Hospital Expansion – UMMC will soon embark on a $20-million facility expansion project that will provide four Operating Rooms, PACU & Stage II Recovery, two Endoscopy Rooms and a Family Waiting and Support Space.

Recent Clinical/Programmatic Developments

The University of Maryland Hospital for Children and the Maryland Stroke and Brain Attack Center were each awarded the prestigious "Gold Seal of Approval" from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) in 2007. Recognized for its pediatric asthma program, the University of Maryland Hospital for Children was the first on the East Coast to earn such recognition.
