Tomorrow's outcomes. Here today at University Specialty Hospital.

Located at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, University Specialty Hospital provides specialized, interdisciplinary care to patients who are critically ill, or have multiple complications and/or failures that require continued hospitalization beyond the acute care setting. Our programs include ventilator care, coma emergence, traumatic brain injury, and medically complex care. Our health care professionals specialize in treating a variety of conditions, ranging from injuries of the brain and spinal cord to slow-healing wounds.

University Specialty Hospital offers several specialty programs that include:

  • The largest of its kind in Maryland, our program offers 24-hour respiratory therapy and an aggressive weaning plan. Pulmonary rehabilitation is overseen by experienced pulmonologists from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
  • Our coma emergence program is run by a staff of specialists who coordinate every aspect of patient care. The team includes physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, speech/language pathologists, social workers, and pharmacists who work with brain-injured patients to help them become more responsive to their environment.
  • The Traumatic Brain Injury program at University Specialty Hospital uses a team approach to provide patients with personalized and goal-oriented care. The secured unit provides a safe environment for patients with problems maintaining appropriate behavior in social situations.
  • For patients who require long-term acute care with specialized nursing and therapy services. These patients may be stable but have multi-system problems requiring specialized services.
  • The Sleep Disorders Center offers an innovative full-service facility, which includes a new state-of-the-art sleep laboratory. A team of multidisciplinary specialists provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of the more than 80 different types of sleep disorders.

Capital Improvements

  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program – Opened in July 2007, this program offers a variety of inpatient and outpatient treatment services to patients who are coping with a chronic respiratory disorder. The new unit offers the latest equipment for pulmonary function testing and assistance, and is supported by a multidisciplinary team, including pulmonologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, social workers and nutritionists, who teach behavioral skills and techniques necessary to help their patients manage their condition.

Recent Clinical/Programmatic Developments

  • The Maryland ALS Clinic opened in July 2007. Created in partnership with the ALS Association, DC/MD/VA Chapter, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine Department of Neurology, the clinic provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art care to patients with ALS (PALS) and their families. Appointments are coordinated so that patients can see the multiple specialists and therapists in one visit instead of having to come back over several days—an increasingly difficult task as the disease progresses. Patients and their families receive information and support when making decisions about how to treat disease complications, such as difficulty eating, swallowing, breathing, and lung infections.
